Vitalism is the belief that what is considered as possessing ‘life’ is, in essence, different from what is considered inanimate, and thus should operate in supremacy over what is deemed as non-life. This has served oppression in many ways, especially within Western imperialism and racism, where what is considered alive is distributed along an arbitrary hierarchy of valuable aliveness (with a white, Western, ‘able’-bodied, considered economically and bodily independent--whatever that means--, male, hetero, etc. personified phenomenon at the center of this measurement), justifying oppression of those positioned lower on the vitalist scale, and naturalizing the exploitation of the ‘non-vital.’ It is frightening and boring.
